Sophia Lebowitz is a journalist and documentary filmmaker living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She is a graduate of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and of CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.  She has worked as an Associate Producer for companies such as Barnicle Brothers, Propagate Studios, Left/Right Productions, and NBC News and as a video journalist for Morning Brew and FiveThirtyEight. Sophia has produced, directed, and shot short documentaries that have been screened at festivals including Doc NYC, Mimesis Documentary Festival, Original Thinkers Festival, and Yellowknife International Film Festival. The latest film she produced, Watcher's of the Land, is a part of National Geographic's Short Film Showcase. Sophia is currently working as a Reporter with Streetsblog while developing a documentary about the first queer/trans-centered salsa band in New York City, Las Mariquitas. In addition to her work with Streetsblog, Sophia's writing and photography has been published by Brooklyner, Chalkbeat, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Refinery 29, and Hell Gate. Sophia’s work explores Latin American culture and history, queer identity, and urbanism.
